CH. FENWICK OF WHIPPOORWILL
10/21/74 - 12/5/88

( Ch. Blue Fox of Whippoorwill x Ch. Whitbarrow Parsley)

Parsley was imported from the English Baydale kennels of Shelia Fenwick and her late mother, Mrs. L.M. Blair - Hence Fenwick's name and that of his equally famous sister, BIS Ch. Lady Blair of Whippoorwill. They were from a litter of eight (six dogs and two bitches), from which Ch. Whippoorwill Larkin of Exeter and Ch. Foxcroft of Whippoorwill also completed their championships.

Fenwick was a handsome red and white dog with good substance, beautiful head and eye, a wonderful personality and temperament. He has passed many of

these qualities on to his offspring. Fenwick had a way of "talking" when being admired and this endearing trait of "whippet talk" has also been passed on to many of his offspring.

Fenwick has sired at least 24 AKC champions. He has offspring which are Field Champions and Obedience titled. Several offspring have also participated in the ARM program.

Some of his famous offspring include Ch. Rolling's Viktor, Ch. Whippletrees Raisin Cain, AM. Can. Ch. Allerei's Portia, and her triple titled littermate Am.Can. Ch. Allerei's Jensen, Am. Can. Cd, Am. Can.FCh. and Ch. Baywood's Renaissance. he is the grandsire of Ch. Saxon Shore Amber Waves and of BIS Ch. O'Bailee's Brittania.

Fenwick has left a living legacy through his offspring and his name appears in the pedigrees of many top winning Whippets today.

The Ch. Fenwick of Whippoorwill Memorial Trophy is being offered by his breeder/owner, Barbara L. Henderson, VMD and will be a perpetual record of Best In Futurity winners. This trophy belongs to the AWC as this record. The owner of Best in Futurity will receive a separate trophy as a memento of the win.

AMERICAN WHIPPET CLUB, INC., FUTURITY CONDITIONS

1. The Futurity will be sponsored by the AWC and is exclusively for the competition of puppies and juniors between 6 months and 18 months of age.

2. The Futurity is open to all breeders of purebred AKC registered Whippets in good standing with the American Kennel Club.

3. Bitches may be nominated at any time between the BREEDING and WHELPING dates. Only puppies whelped by nominated bitches AFTER the date of nomination are eligible. The date of the Post Office cancellation stamp on the envelope will determine the date of nomination. A fee of $10.00 shall accompany the nomination of each bitch. Late Bitch nominations will be accepted if postmarked before the litter is 6 weeks old. The fee for this late nomination is $75.00.

4. After the bitch is nominated, the LITTER must be nominated on a litter nomination sheet and the fee is $15.00. The LITTER must be nominated before it's 3 months old. The Post Office cancellation stamp on the envelope will determine that this nomination has been made prior to the date the litter reaches 3 months of age.

5. After the litter has been nominated and has reached 3 months of age, individual puppies may be nominated. The nomination fee for individuals is $10.00. There is no limit as to how many puppies from a litter may be nominated. Individual puppies may be nominated anytime after the litter is 3 months old and until the closing date of the Futurity. One dollar of each entry will be donated to the A.W.C. National Rescue effort.

6. FUTURITY CLASSES will be divided according to age and sex as follows:

Puppy Dogs, 6-8 months
Puppy Dogs, 8-10 months
Puppy Dogs, 10-12 months
Puppy Dogs, 12-14 months
Junior Dogs, 14-18 months
Puppy Bitches, 6-8 months
Puppy Bitches, 8-10 months
Puppy Bitches, 10-12 months
Puppy Bitches, 12-14 months
Junior Bitches, 14-18 months

The Winners of each class will compete for Best in Futurity

7. In the event that a change must be made in the show date, then the original date shall be the one used in determining eligibility of nominees. Should the show date be set after the original date, then the age limit shall be increased to take care of the differences in time from the original date to the revised date and the nominees affected shall still be eligible for competition in the Junior Class.

8. Nominations of bitches, litters, and individual puppies must be accompanied by checks or money orders made payable to the AWC FUTURITY.

9. Entry Fees will be retained in the event a nominated bitch or puppy is found to be ineligible under the above conditions.

10. The Futurity Judge will be chosen by the AWC members nominating bitches for that year's Futurity. The qualifications for Futurity Judge shall be any person having "hands-on experience" with the Whippet breed and must be in good standing with the A.W.C. For each nominated bitch, the breeder/or breeders may submit one slate of two names. Once those breeders have voted (nominated), they may not vote (nominate), again during the current year. The Breeder(s) must complete the Bitch Nomination according to the schedule of the Futurity rules. All eligible breeders will select two (2) names from the final list of a minimum of six (6) names. The Judges will be queried as to their willingness to judge the event by the sequence established in the balloting process. The alternate Judge will be selected by the second greatest number of votes. The Judge who accepts this nomination will be assigned as an alternate.

11. Prize money for class winners and for Best In Futurity shall be awarded to the breeder/breeders only. If the owner or exhibitor of the winning dog is not the breeder and the breeder is not present, a check will be mailed directly to the breeder. It is between the breeders, exhibitors, and owners to decide possession of any ribbons, rosettes, medallions, or other prizes presented for any wins.

12. At least 35% of the entry fees will be retained by the Futurity committee for expenses. The remaining entry fees will be divided between the breeders of the class winners and the breeder of the Best in Futurity.

After retaining 35% for Futurity expenses, 35% of the remaining money will be paid to the breeder of the Best in Futurity. The remaining 65% of the entry fees for each class to be divided as follows:

First in each class 40%

Second in each class 30%

Third in each class 20%

Fourth in each class 10%

All dogs for the 1995 Futurity must have been whelped on or before October 24, 1994. Bitches must be nominated while in whelp (or before 6 weeks old if late Bitch Nomination fee is submitted). Litter must be nominated before 3 months old and individuals may be nominated anytime after 3 months old and the closing of the Futurity.

KAREN BOWERS LEE
SURREY HILL

Our 1995 Futurity judge, Karen Bowers Lee, breeds and exhibits whippets under the Surrey Hill prefix, which she shares with her mother Carolyn Bowers. Mrs. Lee has shown dogs since her teens and her first champion was a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. However, since that first whippet arrived in 1979, she has desired no other breed. Karen has personally bred or co-bred 20 AKC champions, 12 CKC champions and 10 ASFA F. Ch.'s (Carolyn Bowers has bred or co-bred approximately 40 AKC champions). She also has owned or co-owned numerous other champions, not the least of which are Multi-SBIS Am. Can. Ch. Allerei's A'int Misbehavin F. Ch. ROM, BIS Am Can. Ch. Surrey Hill Goldenrod, and Select Am.SBIS Can Ch. Surrey Hill's Savannah ROM SC.

An avid breed booster and an enthusiastic club member, Mrs. Lee has served as President, Vice-President, and Secretary of Western Washington Whippet Association; Vice-President and Field Trial Secretary for Mid-Atlantic Sighthound Association; and is currently a member of Jersey Whippet Rag Racers. Mrs. Lee was instrumental in bringing lure coursing to central North Carolina, participated in NPR and NOTRA with her dogs in Washington, and plans to renew her involvement in racing events as a member of JWRR.

Mrs. Lee has stated that many of her fondest memories as a breeder/exhibitor are from the times she has shown her young stock in the AWC Futurity. She is very grateful for the honor of officiating at our premier "breeders showcase", and hopes that all who exhibit here today will find many ringside fans for their young hopefuls and will thoroughly enjoy themselves. Formerly employed in HIV research, Mrs. Lee is currently staying home with her toddler son, Eric, and is particularly grateful that the Futurity voters have given her this wonderful midweek vacation from her home in Chadds Ford, PA!

THE OFFICIAL STANDARD OF THE WHIPPET

General Appearance

A medium size sighthound giving the appearance of elegance and fitness, denoting great speed, power and balance without coarseness. A true sporting hound that covers a maximum of distance with a minimum of lost motion. Should convey an impression of beautifully balanced muscular power and strength, combined with great elegance and grace of outline. Symmetry of outline, muscular development and powerful gait are the main considerations; the dog being built for speed and work, all forms of exaggeration should be avoided.

Size, Proportion, Substance

Ideal height for dogs, 19 to 22 inches, for bitches, 18 to 21 inches, measured at the highest point of the withers. More than one-half inch above or below the stated limits will disqualify. Length from forechest to buttocks equal to or slightly greater than height at the withers. Moderate bone throughout.Head

Keen intelligent alert expression.

Eyes large and dark. Both eyes must be of the same color. Yellow or light eyes should be strictly penalized. Blue or wall eyes shall disqualify. Fully pigmented eyelids are desirable.

Rose ears, small, fine in texture; in repose, thrown back and folded along neck. Fold should be maintained when at attention. Erect ears should be severely penalized.

Skull long and lean, fairly wide between the ears, scarcely perceptible stop. Muzzle should be long and powerful, denoting great strength of bite, without coarseness. Lack of underjaw should be strictly penalized. Nose entirely black. Teeth of upper jaw should fit closely over teeth of lower jaw creating a scissors bite. Teeth should be white and strong. Undershot shall disqualify. Overshot one-quarter inch or more shall disqualify.

Neck, Topline, Body

Neck long, clean and muscular, well arched with no suggestion of throatiness, widening gracefully into the top of the shoulder. A short thick neck, or a ewe neck, should be penalized.

The back is broad, firm and well muscled, having length over the loin. The backline runs smoothly from the withers with a graceful natural arch, not too accentuated, beginning over the loin and carrying through over the croup; the arch is continuous without flatness. A dip behind shoulder blades, wheelback, flat back or a steep or flat croup should be penalized.

Brisket very deep, reaching as nearly as possible to the point of the elbow. Ribs well sprung but with no suggestion of barrel shape. The space between the forelegs is filled in so that there is no appearance of a hollow between them. There is a definite tuckup of the underline.

The tail long and tapering, reaching to the hipbone when drawn through between the hind legs. When the dog is in motion, the tail is carried low with only a gentle upward curve, tail should not be carried higher than top of back.

Forequarters

Shoulder blade long, well laid back, with flat muscles, allowing for moderate space between shoulder blades at peak of withers. Upper arm of equal length, placed so that the elbow falls directly under the withers. The points of the elbows should point neither in nor out, but straight back. A steep shoulder, short upper arm, a heavily muscled or loaded shoulder, or a very narrow shoulder, all of which restrict low free movement, should be strictly penalized. Forelegs straight, giving appearance of strength and substance of bone. Pasterns strong, slightly bent and flexible. Bowed legs, tied in elbows, legs lacking substance, legs set far under the body so as to create and exaggerated forechest, weak or upright pasterns should be strictly penalized. Both front and rear feet must be well formed with hard, thick pads. Feet more hare than cat, but both are acceptable. Flat, splayed or soft feet without thick hard pads should be strictly penalized. Toes should be long, close, and well arched. Nails strong and naturally short or of moderate length. Dewclaws may be removed.

Hindquarters

Long and powerful. The thighs are broad and muscular, stifles well bent; muscles are long and flat and carry well down toward the hock. The hocks are well let down and close to the ground. Sickle or cow hocks should be strictly penalized.

Coat

Short, close, smooth and firm in texture. Any other coat shall be a disqualification. Old scars and injuries, the result of work or accident, should not be allowed to prejudice the dog's chance in the show ring.

Color

Color immaterial.

Gait

Low, free moving and smooth, with reach in the forequarters and strong drive in the hindquarters. The dog has great freedom of action when viewed from the side; the forelegs move forward close to the ground to give a long low reach; the hind legs have strong propelling power. When moving and viewed from front or rear, legs should be neither in nor out, nor should feet cross or interfere with each other.

Lack of front reach or rear drive, or a short, hackney gait with high wrist action, should be strictly penalized. Crossing in front or moving too close should be strictly penalized.

Temperment

Amiable, friendly, gentle, but capable of great intensity during sporting pursuits.

Disqualifications.

One-half inch above or below stated height limits.

Blue or wall eyes.

Undershot, overshot one-quarter inch or more.

Any coat other than short, close, smooth and firm in texture.

Approved August 10, 1993 Effective September 29, 1993
