The Bettie Crawford Memorial Perpetual Trophy

Thls bronze trophy was created by renowned artlst Garry Newton and depicts a Whippet head study, wlth rosette, lure wrapping around a pulley, and dumbell, whlch represent the three events of the Trlathlon. The 12" - 14" trophy ld mounted on a wooden base and the name of each winner wlll be engraved on the attached plaque.

The work was commlssioned by the owners of the Whippet-L e-mail llst and the frlends and famlly of Bdettie Crawford in recognitlon of her support of the llst's mission to promote the versatlle, multi-purpose Whlppet. Bettle, a charter subscriber of the Whippet- L list, passed away in January 1999. She was a well-respected breeder of Collles (Celestial Collies), Whippet owner, and Judge. She wlll be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Thls trophy ls belng presented to the Wlnner of the Trlathlon. It wlll remain the possession of the AWC until lt has been won three tlmes by the same owner, not necessarlly wlth the same dog. A 6" bronze medallion wlll be presented to the winner each year for permanent possesslon.

2001 AWC NATIONAL TRIATHLON RULES AND SCORING

The scoring the Triathlon is based on scores earned in the following thee events:

Obedience, Lure Coursing and Conformation. Each of the three events will have a possible 100 points base score. The total scores for all three events will be added together, along with any bonus points earned by the dog. The dog with the highest point total will be declared the 2001 Triathlon Champion. Spayed and neutered Whippets are eligible to compete in classes which allow such.

OBEDIENCE: The score for the Obedience Event is one-half of the total points earned in the Obedience Trial Class ( or 100 points maximum)

CONFORMATION: The score for the Triathlon Conformation Event is determined by the judge's evaluation of that dog in the Triathlon Conformation Class and is recorded on the Conformation Score Sheet (100 points maximum). LURE COURSING: The score for the Lure Coursing Event is one-quarter of the total score awarded by the two judges for the preliminary and final courses (or 100 points maximum).

VETERAN COMPETITION: Bonus points are awarded for first place in the Veteran Conformation Classes OR any class placement in Veteran Sweepstakes. You can only use ONE of these methods.

BONUS POINTS

Each dog (in addition to their actual Triathlon score) will be eligible for a maximum of 20 bonus points in each of three events. See the bonus points offered below. If a dog qualified for more than one bonus point category in any one event, he will only be awarded trie higher bonus points. Example: A dog wins first in a Lure Coursing Stake (15 points) and goes BOB (20). He is awarded the higher points (20). He can still earn two more sets of bonus points, one for Conformation and one for Obedience

I have always had dogs, even while I was growing up. My first dogs of my own were a black miniature poodle and a chihuahua-yorkshire-terrier mix. My first actual trained dog was my first Bichon Frise, Peaches. She came into my life Dec 23, 1986. When she was about 9 months of age, my vet suggested that she needed to go to obedience school and that was my first acquaintance with formal dog training. She and I went and she got the class scholarship as the most improved dog and a free next class so we continued training and have been doing so ever since. I also joined South Plains Obedience Training Club about this time and have been a member ever since. I served three years as secretary, two years as President and have served as Treasurer the last seven years. I have been trial chairman of five obedience trials and have taught both puppy and basic household classes in the past and have started teaching again recently. Peaches got her CD on June 12,1988 and her CDX on September 3,1988. I then started work on my doctorate so dog training took a back seat for a little while. I continued to work on utility activities and train my other dogs in basic obedience. Over the course of time I acquired two additional Bichons, which started my career as a breeder. The remainder of my dogs are all ones that I have bred. We became acquainted with agility when the San Angelo club had a fun match with some rather different equipment than what is used today. That year, we entered the Gamblers and Jumpers classes at Astro Hall in Houston and that really started our agility career. We came in second in gamblers and last in jumpers as Peaches stopped and smelled every flower under each jump so she had a multitude of fault points. Since AKC agility had not started yet, we did USDAA. Peaches was the first Bichon to get an AD in November 1991 and also the first Bichon to get an ADD in April 1993. Katy was the first Bichon to get an AKC agility leg in Novice in August of 1994 when they held the first show at Astrohall. Peaches got her MX at the first AKC National held in Oklahoma City in Novbember of 1996. I have put a number of novice, open and excellent agility and novice, open and excellent jumpers with weaves titles on my dogs. Katy has nine MX legs and counting, but judging sometimes interferes with my time to both train and show. I usually have four or five bichons entered at any one show. I started.showing in confirmation in 1992 and have finished eight of my dogs, seven that I bred. I do my own showing because I want the satisfaction of doing the job myself. I have bred four litters of puppies and the most recent champion makes my brood bitch a dam of merit. I participated in the AKC agility judging seminar in house, April 29-30, 1995 and passed the testing and completed my provisional judging in May of 1996. I have been judging agility ever since and really enjoy the challenges, especially designing courses that are both fun yet challenging for the exhibitors. I really enjoy the addition of the jumpers with weaves as those courses add different and unique challenges for the dogs and handlers. I have three dogs who are certified therapy dogs. They all participate in my work with handicapped children and are thoroughly loved by the children and teachers who work with them.
