2005 AWC National Specialty
Whippet Top Twenty

2005 Top Twenty Event
Official Rules and Regulations
Purpose:
The Top Twenty Event has been initiated to encourage the exhibition of Whippets in the breed competition. Each event will be part of the AWC National Specialty and will serve a variety of purposes in educating judges, exhibitors, breeders and fanciers and will offer all an opportunity to view the Cream of the Crop competing together in one ring. The competition will also promote discussions of the standard which encourages the exchange of ideas and will provide a showcase for those Whippets with the most outstanding records in breed competition.
Eligibility:
The Top Twenty standings are based on show results January – December from the year preceding the National Specialty as published on the AKC official website. Dogs will be awarded 1 point for each dog defeated in breed competition only. Once the final statistics have been 4 obtained from the AKC official website, the T op Twenty Whippets will be invited to participate at the event the following April at the AWC National Specialty.
Excluded in the event in subsequent years will be any previous winners. They may attend and be presented for Exhibition. If the final T op Twenty standings include a previous winner or winners, the Top Twenty Whippets with the highest point totals that have not won any previous Top Twenty Event are invited to participate. Previous winners will be noted in the standings. Dogs owned, co-owned and/or handled by the event chairperson are ineligible for competition.
Judges:
Three judges with no affiliation to any of the Top Twenty participants will be selected, one from each of the following categories:
1. Breeder – An established Whippet breeder who has been breeding for at least five years or who has produced at least live Champions of Record as published by the AKC Awards Gazelle.
2. AKC – Licensed Hound Group Judge –A licensed judge approved to judge the entire hound group.
3. Handler (past or present) – A professional handler meeting the requirements for membership in a Professional Handler's organization (though not necessarily a member). Must have at least five year's experience with Whippets.
The names of those selected to judge will be kept confidential until the day of the event.
Scoring:
Each judge will individually evaluate each participating Whippet. Each judge receives an official score sheet for each participant. On the official score sheet, each judge will score the participant on conformation to the standard, movement, and overall presentation. These scores are turned into their respective ring steward at the end of each participant evaluation. The ring stewards turn the score sheets over to the Top Twenty chairperson. On the day of the Awards Banquet, the Auditing Committee, consisting of the Top Twenty chairperson and stewards, will tabulate and total the scores for each dog. The Top 5 choices from each judge will be placed in order, 1" through 5', on official scorecards. Scoring will be as follows:
1st place = 100 points;
2nd place = 80 points;
3rd place = 70 points;
4th place = 60 points;
5th place = 50 points.
The scores for each dog from each of the three judges will be added together and divided by three to determine each dog's average score. The results of the event will not be announced immediately after the competition but rather will be kept confidential until the Awards Banquet. At the Awards Banquet, the dog with the highest average score will be declared the winner of the Top Twenty Event.

Breeder Judge
Deann Christianson

My introduction to Whippets was at the tender age of 19. During my involvement with Arabian horses 1 had the opportunity to meet a Whippet and instantly MI in love with the snobby little creature. I vowed to be owned by one. Upon the marriage to my husband Lee, I informed him were going to buy a Whippet. At the risk of sounding trite... the rest is history!
I, along with my husband, Lee have been passionately involved in this wonderful breed for 22 years under the prefix of "Chelsea". During that time we have bred or co-bred 110 American champions to date. We were top Whippet breeders of Champions for three years (1992, 1999 and 2000). Amongst the champions are 6 BIS winners worldwide. We have bred or cobred 4 AWC Best in Futurity winners and owner/handled yet another. Our dogs have won WD at the AWC National on 3 occasions. BOS 3 times. We do pride ourselves in a dual purpose line and our dogs are enthusiastic and clean runners. We have bred 4 AKC Field Champions and 12 ASFA field champions even though our main interest is in the conformation ring. Our stud dogs have been ranked #1 in the Nation for 5 years running. We were thrilled to have dogs of our breeding win this tournament 2 years in a row in 2001 and 2002.
I am deeply honored to have been asked to judge this tournament. I look forward to immersing myself in the task of choosing the best of the best!
Sincerely, Deann Christianson
Handler Judge
Kelly Riney

My name is now Kelly Riney, though most of you know me as Kelly Rudolph, the younger half and west coast part of Festive Whippets. I have owned, bred and shown whippets since 1989. My start in the dog world began well before that time, this year actually marks twenty-one years of showing dogs, nine of them professionally. At four years old it was common to find me at the end of leash that was attached to either a German Shepherd or a Toy Poodle. Mow at shows you can find me showing any of the AKC breeds. 1 was a junior handler for a time but had too many people wanting me to handle their dogs so I stopped participating in juniors and began to be paid for my services.
My experience in the presentation of animals is not limited to dogs. When I was young my family raised and presented pygmy goats and budgerigars (parakeets). With this diverse background 1 found that it did not matter what type of animal you were presenting, the key is to have that animal look it's best, behave as expected and do my best to show all their strong points while playing down the not so strong ones. I have had a lot of fun showing whippets and have been honored to take many to specialty wins. In April of 2003 my handling in the whippet world was crowned when I had the pleasure of presenting an incredible dog to the title of national specialty winner. I hope to continue to present incredible dogs of all breeds for judges and breeders to admire well into the future.
I feel very honored to have been chosen to judge as the handler at this Top Twenty event. This will be my first time judging these wonderful whippets that are our countries current stars as well as observing all of the effort their handlers have invested in their conditioning, training and presentation. In the past I have had the pleasure of judging sweepstakes for a few breeds and have found judging to be a fantastic experience, though the excitement I feel about having been bestowed this judging honor is amazing.

Mary Downing
I have been "in dogs" since the early '70s. I began showing Sporting breeds (Irish Setters, Gordon Setters, Eng. Cockers) in about '73. 1 helped the local Irish Setter club obtain their license and they held their 30th anniversary specialty last year! I have had Whippets since the late '70s and nothing else since my last sporting dogs left this life. I am a charter member of the Western Washington Whippet Assoc. and have held just about every office in that
organization. Was also a founding member of the Western Washington Hound Assoc. and currently belong to the infant All Hound Club of Bellingham. I have been a member of AWC since the mid-80's and currently do breeder referral for that organization.
I have finished Whippet bench champions and field champions in both the U.S. and Canada with the Whimsy name. My greatest thrill is successfully showing a dog 1 have bred. That will always be my "because of it all..."
Tracy Hite
I grew up heavily involved in showing horses and ranching. My family is full of old-time cattlemen, so animals were always a big part of my life. My first experience with whippets was back in the mid 1980's when my mother purchased her first whippet. Admittedly, I was not instantly taken with the breed. But it did not take long for me to fall completely in love.
I helped my mother show her first whippet
and soon the "potato chip theory" took over
and she had another. Not long after, I decided I
wanted one of my own.
With the help of our good friends, Allen Odom & Phil Hedges (Phil-Allen whippets), I purchased a beautiful little fawn brindle and white puppy from Karen Flint of Skeedoodle Kennels in Texas. Her name was "Nanny" (Ch. Skeedoodle's Banana Banshee) and she forever changed my life and prompted the beginning of Ti vio Whippets.
Currently, my life has two main facets — First, my family (my husband John and our children Caroline and Pierce, ages 5 and 3 respectively); and Secondly, our whippets. We have actively bred, and in some cases handled, dogs to many titles—AKC All-Breed BIS, SBIS, SBOS, Selects, Hound Group winners, High In Trial, Best In Field, AWC Top 'Twenty qualifiers and winner, ASFA FCh, OTR, CAV, Specialty Best In Sweepstakes, Specialty point winners, Westminster KC BOB, ROM & ROMX Producers, and All-Breed/All Systems #1 Whippet.
The majority of these titles and wins were accomplished by breeder/ owner/handlers or owner/handlers, which makes us very proud.
It is an honor for me to steward for the 2005 Top Twenty event. Congratulations and good luck to all the dogs, owners, breeders and handlers.
Sue Vernon
I have always been fascinated by dogs. As a child I saved all of my money and at the age of
13 1 bought my first purebred dog, a German Shepherd. Since that time 1 have been involved with purebred dogs. I have owned many different breeds in my lifetime but was always looking for the perfect breed. I found it in the whippets in 1989. I acquired my first whippet from Carol Chittum in 1989. She was bought as a pet but it was not long before I decided that wanted to show whippets. I spent time at dog shows and found that over and over again I was attracted to dogs from the same kennel — the Chelsea whippets. It was not long before 1 had
acquired more whippets from Deann. One of them was Ch. Chelsea Legerdemain who I eventually bred to my Belaya bitch. The pick bitch from that breeding was bred to another of my Chelsea boys, Ch. Chelsea Antipodes. From that breeding came Ch. Summit Jasmine ROM from whom most all of my dogs descend. I love the whippets for their beauty, athleticism, affectionate nature and their intelligence (although not always channeled in an acceptable way).
En my "other life" I am a Nurse Practitioner working in an inpatient setting in Pediatric Oncology where I have worked for 20 years. It is a very challenging and rewarding career and 1 am continually in awe of the strength and courage of the children and their families as they fight their disease.
I appreciate the opportunity to be here among some of the country's most beautiful whippets. This is a great breed and credit is due to the wonderful and caring people who are owned by a whippet(s).

Multi SBIS Ch. Bohem Belle du Jour
Sex: Bitch Call Name: "Audrey" Color: White & Brindle
DOB: April 21, 2002 Height: 19"
Most Memorable Win: The most memorable wins are the ones we actually get to see ourselves (as owners). There are 3 equal importance to me: Audrey's Select at Westminster and her back-to-back Specialty wins in Seattle (Western Washington) and Atlanta.
I felt like the luckiest guy in the world when I acquired Audrey at 7 months old. And, was fortunate to be able to quickly finish her owner/handled with 3 majors, including a Specialty Major at the Western Hound Show and a 5- point Major at the AWC Western Regional.
At only a year-and-a-half, I decided to give Audrey a shot as a Special... Warmed her up with multiple BOB's in the late summer of2003... Then flew her off to Florida, where she was placed in "boot camp" and the talented and loving hands of Barbara Wayne.
The decision was a good one! Audrey and Barb became an incredible team. They made their first mark at Westminster with as AOM behind the Top 3 dogs in 2003 and 2004, and be gan winning consistently in the Breed ring, immediately thereafter. Audrey's success in the Group ring followed, with I0 Consecutive Group Firsts or placements during mid-2004! Among her numerous important wins, Audrey went Best in Show over 400+ entries at the Potomac Hound Club under Breeder/Judge David Markus... won her 1st SBIS at Western Washington Whippet Association under Randy Tincher... and her 2nd SBIS under Claire Newcombe during the AWC Southern Specialty weekend in Atlanta.
A little more than 2 '/2 years old and fresh on the scene, Audrey wrapped up 2004 in the TOP 5! A record and ranking that astounded us all! What an honor it is to be here tonight.
Good Luck to all... Have a wonderful evening!

American Canadian Ch Brushwood Moxi of Endeavor
Sex: Bitch Call Name: "Moxi" Color: White & Brindle
DOB: August 12, 2002 Height: 20"
Most Memorable Win: Best of Breed at 2004 AWC National Specialty Show.
Before she was a year of age, Moxi had established herself as a superstar in Canada , first by winning the Whippet Club of Canada's National Specialty at 10 months of age under Joan Goldstein and the several weeks later her first all breed Best in Show. Within several months, Moxi had won another Best in Show, becoming Canada's #1 whippet and #7 hound for 2003. In addition to winning 3 more Best in Shows in early 2004, she managed to pick up several majors in the United States, one just before the 2004 National Specialty. We joked about finishing her championship by going winner's bitch at the AWC National (Who hasn't wished for that?). Well, the rest is history. Moxi not only won the coveted Winner's bitch award, but she went on to win Best of Breed in an entry of over 800. The moment that Judge Espen Engh moved her to the front of the line is one we will remember and treasure all our lives. Since that incredible experience, Moxi has won another 22 Canadian Best in Shows and one American Best in Show, for a career total of 28 (as of December 2004). She currently the top winning Best in Show whippet of all time in Canada, In 2004 she finished Canada's #1 whippet, #1 hound and is ranked quite highly among the top 10 of all Breeds.

Zoom started her career in the U.S. by winning Best Puppy at the 2001 American Whippet Club National Specialty. She returned to Canada with her breeder/ owner Dennis Sumara and finished her Canadian Championship easily, picking up 11 All Breed Best Puppy In Shows, 15 Groups First, 2 Best Puppy In Specialties, and she was twice Best In Specialty Show at the Stampede City Whippet Club.

Lord Henry had a wonderful year, despite entering fewer shows that in 2003. On October 25, 2003 a litter was born to him and his mate Sanani (Ch. Tivio's Touch Gold), former Top Twenty Whippet. The five dogs and three bitches had a wonderful start to their careers, three winning Puppy BIS. Four are already Canadian/Intl Champions and three are pointed in the US; Anne Boleyn has a 3 point major. We anticipate another good year for the litter.
Lord Henry has several memorable wins during this past year, including multiple breed wins, tow Group One wins back-to-back in Spokane, and several other Group placements. He continues his therapy work at local hospitals and hospices.

Most Memorable Win: 5pt Major and BOW at the Inland Empire Hound Show, Palm Springs
Pepper always knew lie world stay with us. He captured our hearts in the first few days after he was horn. Kim White saw him at 8 weeks of age and advised us to keep him close, as she said "there was something special about him' - how prophetic that was. At that time we did not intend to show him, but Kim later asked to take him in the ring. At his first weekend out at 6 months of age he was RWD to a 3 pt major. A few shows later he was BOW at the Inland Empire Hound Show in Palm Springs for a 5 pt major. His show career took off and he soon finished his Championship. With limited Specialing in 2004, he had an exciting year, gaining several prestigious BOB wins, Multiple Group Ones, Group Placements and AOM's.
Pepper's special attribute is his wonderful gentle personality which gains him friends and fans wherever he goes. When his show career is over, we plan to expand the therapy work that he has already started. Many thanks to Kim White for her professional and loving handling; it has been a fun year.

SBIS American Canadian Ch Windy Day's Jade McKenzie
Sex: Bitch Call Name: "Jada" Color: Brindle & White
DOB: July 16, 2002 Height: 19/2"
Most Memorable Win: Jada's first hound group one under judge Betty Anne Stenmark - certainly starting our quest for the Top Twenty right!
Little did I know that little whippet puppy I brought home one September afternoon would change my life in oh so many ways. Jada was named in honor of my dear friend Debi Adams and her Jade whippets who so graciously let me have her "stud fee" puppy, a little girl I had waited a long time for. Debi knew I wanted a good whippet to show, bout I also wanted a loving companion with a great temperament. I got both in spades!
Jada finished easily with both Debi and I handling. Along the way she was awarded several breed wins from the classes and placements in the group. An inkling of things to come
In 2004 I started a serious bid for the AWC Top Twenty and Jada proved herself over and over again. To date she has earned 41 Bests of Breed, and 28 group placements, including 9 group firsts in both the US and Canada. Jada is the consummate show dog, always ready to go and full of attitude. It is truly and honor to own such a dog and a huge thrill to be included in the Top Twenty with the top whippets in the nations.
Our special thanks to everyone who supported us this past year, the judges, exhibitors, spectators and breeders that have recognized our efforts and achievements. My gratitude to Genevieve Day, Jada's breeder for raising such a gem. But most of all, thank you Debi for my wonderful Jada Potata. We wanted to do you proud!

Sex: Bitch Call Name: "CC" Color: Brindle & White
DOB: June 20, 2001 Height: 20 V2"
Most Memorable Win: Back to Back Best of Breeds and a Group 4 under Mrs. Patricia V Trotter and Mr Charles Trotter at the Land 0' Lakes Kennel Club. The Midwwest whippet community has been so wonderful, and sharing this with them was very special.
CC started her show career with a bang. In only her 3rd show, CC was awarded a Group I, under Dr. Asa Mays. That was her first major. Her second major came from another Group 1, under Ms. Marjorie Matorella. Shortly thereafter, CC was introduced to the AWC by earning 1st in the Open Bitch class at the 2003 AWC National Specialty.
Since then it's been an incredible journey. CC has been entirely owner handled by first time whippet owner Scot Northern. She's won over 50 BOBs, she's taken numerous Group wins and placements, and she's earned an AOM at the 2004 AWC North Central Specialty. In 2005, CC will strive to prove that she is more than just a "beauty queen" as she works towards her Companion Dog (CD) title with Scot's wife, Hope, as well as continuing her agility training with Scot.
CC has incredible breed type and a powerful elegance that takes command of a ring. Her reach and drive are breath taking. When you look at her head, you will get lost in her big, round, black eyes. CC is an absolute pleasure to live with, a best friend to Scot, and a truly special girl. We are honored to have been invited. Thank you!
