Snapper was my first show dog, my first champion, and the most ornery Whippet I've ever owned. He could never be crate broken, could get hurt trying to get out of any kind made, he destroyed any room he was shut in, and felt his place in life was glued to me. We finally worked out things, he was allowed free run of house when I had to run errands without him...for which he then would only "mark" the corner of my bedspread. Every person I knew, and many I didn't, held him at shows while I was in the ring with my Borzoi girl. But they only volunteered to hold him one time for me. I once had to scour the show grounds to find him as he kept getting handed off to others to hold, none of which I knew and most of which who weren't even Whippet owners. It was quite a ride with Snap. He went on to the be the basis of Sangaree Whippets and I am thankful to say none of his kids ever took after him except in his good points. He ultimately finished with three majors, the last being a 5pt major with over 51 Whippets entered. And that day he also took BOB over 10 Specials. What a fantastic way to finish. I lost him at age 14 to kidney disease, and he left a hugh empty place in my heart and my bed. His ashes will someday be scattered with mine, I can't imagine leaving this world without a Whippet....and Snapper certainly would have never let me if he'd had his way.
