Training for Whippets - Clicker Training

By Dr. Adele Monroe, DVM

Over the past 25 years, I think I've tried just about all the approaches there are for training dogs. I stopped looking for a "better" method when I discovered Clicker Training (aka Operant Conditioning). Clicker training has it all, builds attention, builds the relationship between person and dog, and it's the fastest technique I've found for teaching behaviors. The dogs think it's a game, not work.

I strongly recommend the following books by Karen Pryor as good starting points:
Don't Shoot the Dog: The New Art of Teaching (As many examples with humans as with animals. Should be required reading for parenting--two-leggeds, that is. :)

Lads Before the Wind: Diary of a Dolphin Trainer (Fascinating book filled with excellent examples of operant conditioning at work. By the time you've read how marine mammals are trained, without collar & leash, you'll know it's possible to train a whippet.)
