It was great having all of these original photos to work with for these two great pieces of whippet history.

Here is a short interview done by Frederica Page in 1980. Thought it would go well with her pages.

I came into Whippets by "bits and pieces," having owned and shown twenty-odd breeds in the years before. How I wish I had started with Whippets in the very beginning — sh —sh — we're talking of fifty years ago! I'd never have owned another breed!

My first Whippet was one of Pearl Baumgartner's — Ch. White Acres Stardust." Pearl became a dear and cherished friend to this day. "Sophie" went back to Pearl to be shown and bred and stayed in Washington... Next I bought "Home-place Calliope" from Norman Ellis, right out of the ring at Santa Barbara, the year Marion Woodcock judged. I had a lot of fun, and gained a lot of experience showing Calliope to her championship. Unfortunately she was a fence jumper and a bit of a fighter, and not being equipped to handle this problem, I sold her back to Norman who got some fine Whippets from her.

My two foundation brood bitches were Ch. Hollypark Hasty Venture, bought from Dot and Bob Hastings; and Ch. Humble Acre Happy Chance, bought from Jeanne Ellis of Indiana. Both these bitches were bought as ten week old puppies; so I had the pleasure of raising and campaigning them.

Hasty Venture produced my beloved "Tina" — Ch. Farvel One and Only — in the only litter she was able to have; and was spayed and my dear companion for nine years. "Tina" made her championship easily handled by Dot and myself, but was never bred or specialed because of severe intestinal problems. However, I consider her one of the most beautiful Whippets I've known. She was my heart of hearts, and constant companion until we lost her to final kidney failure at age seven — never to be replaced.

Ch. Humble Acre Happy Chance was the real foundation of the "Farvel Look" which people have been gracious enough to admire. I had the pleasure of winning one of the Western Specialties (115 Whippets) with her, handling her myself.

Among Happy's champion descendants, best known are Ch. Farvel Whirlyson, owned by Bonnie Boucher, who made Top Ten and Ch. Farvel Falchion of Sangaree, owned by Karen Schechterle of Tolleson, Arizona. Falchion is proving to be an outstanding sire, having to his credit Ch. Farvel Miss Independence, Can. Am. Ch. Farvel Patrick Henry, Farvel So Proudly We Hail, starting off with a four point major and Sangaree Secret Sun (12 points won in three 4 point majors).

Last but by no means least is my beloved "Heidi" — Can. Ch. Windance Carnival O' Woodsmoke, sent to be by Pat Miller to ease the void left by the loss of Tina, which she did nobly. Heidi produced one litter of thirteen no less, having had nine in a litter for Pat. My litter included Nora — Lucky and Joy, mentioned above, by Falchion. Unfortunately uterine complications necessitated Heidi's being spayed. Twenty-two puppies in two litters seems enough anyway!
