Lesson in Anatomy

THE GREYHOUND IS OUR ANATOMY STUDY THIS MONTH: This ancient breed is a worthy example of beauty and structure for a specific purpose. Here is a dog so swift that he can bring down the fleetest antelope; so agile that he can match the hare, turn for turn; and so strong that he can conquer the huge horned rani, or bring to bay the mighty lion.

No one knows how old the Greyhound breed may be—nor from whence it originated. Dogs of the Greyhound type are to be found wherever the earliest records of canines exist. They appear on the Tombs of Egypt and on Assyrian monuments. Dates go back over 4000 B. C. and, undoubtedly, the Greyhound has altered least of any of the very early breeds; his appearance showing but little change through the ages.

He is a sight hound, or gazehound, with keen vision. His body is long, lean and deep of rib for large lung and heart capacity. His bones are long and relatively slender, but of great density and strength. Correspondingly, his muscles are long, sinewy and of great power and endurance. In motion as in pose the Greyhound is like living poetry.
