Betty and Bob Graham, owners of Crackerbox Kennels of Greensboro, N. C., pictured in the den-trophy room with three of their dogs.

Crackerbox Kennels

Bob and Betty Graham, owners of Crackerbox Cocker Spaniel Kennels owned the greatest champion-producer of all breeds for 1961.

Betty and Bob Graham of Greensboro, North Carolina, celebrate their 24th wedding anniversary this month and, for the last 14 years, the breeding and showing of Cocker Spaniels has been their mutual hobby, along with golf, a game they both enjoy immensely. They have one son, Bob III, who is presently in Puerto Rico with the Marines and, by the way, his engagement to be married has just been announced.

Their home and kennel is located on two and one half acres in a residential area, called Sedgefield, the site of the famous Sedgefield Country Club and its golf course, thereby making it mighty convenient for the Grahams to enjoy both of their hobbies. The kennel, accessible both from the kitchen and the den, means that the dogs take turns enjoying home life, and thus are not strictly kennel dogs.

Purposely built so that it can handle only a limited number of dogs, Crackerbox now houses seven champion Cocker bitches and two young bitches which will be shown during this year. In addition, they now own two beautiful Whippet bitches, recently purchased from Stoney Meadows Kls: the lovely group- winning fawn, Ch. Stoney Meadows Moonlight whose dam is the top-producing English import, Laguna Leonie; and a fine young bitch, out of Mrs. Wear's Ch. Stoney Meadows Golden Apple. Both will be shown this year in the ring.

The homebred bitch which holds a spot in Betty and Bob's heart and which cannot be replaced is the late Ch. Crackerbox Collar and Cuffs, "Doll," as she was called.

CH. CRACKERBOX COLLAR AND CUFFS, dam of BOB-winning Ch. Crackerbox Crepe Soles; and two bitches, Ch. Crackerbox Copper Print and Ch. Crackerbox Crepe Suzette (darn of the renowned "Certainly''); these bitches are still with the Grahams. "Doll" was the Grahams' favorite.

Although they have bred some 20 or more champions, Betty and Bob have always felt that there was no point in keeping a stud dog unless they were convinced that he truly had something to contribute to the breed. Therefore, "Certainly" was the first stud dog maintained and he was placed at stud at Ted Young's Tedwin Kls, in Rocky Hill, Conn. Now the sire of 40 champions, he has certainly justified the Grahams' faith in his ability to produce.

CH. CHATTERBOX COSTUME

One of the programs that has held top priority at Crackerbox for the last two years is the breeding of tri-color Cockers. Betty felt there was much improvement to be made in these dogs and looked forward to the challenge. The result of her first effort was the most attractive tri-color champion bitch, Ch. Crackerbox Costume. "Costume" was Betty's private project and she handled her to all of her wins, including variety wins from the classes; she won under specialty and all- around judges alike.

As is so often the case, most of the real work falls into the hands of the "lady of the house," and there has been no exception at Crackerbox. Therefore, Betty feels that her real reward comes when she can handle the dogs she has raised and trained herself and this is a pleasure she takes advantage of whenever and wherever she can.

The next step in her tri-color breeding program resulted in the producing of a half-brother of Costume which will be known as Crackerbox Confidential. Four of the five puppies he sired in his first litter were tricolors, a very high percentage, indeed. Confidential will join his sire, Ch. Crackerbox Certainly, at stud at Ted Young's, and will be campaigned to his championship by him.

Crackerbox-bred dogs have been shown from the State of Washington to Florida and from New Hampshire to Hawaii and have done their fair share of winning. But the Grahams feel that if any kennel is to produce consistent quality over the years it must be based on top-producing bitch lines and this has always been their first consideration.

Thanks and appreciation to Bob Graham for his interest and wonderful cooperation in keeping the records of the champion-producers of the year.

DIANNE T. MOORE 74 SPLIT ROCK RD. 516 - WA. 1 - 2963 SYOSSET, NEW YORK

THE policy of this kennel is to breed only the best and judging by results this year this has been achieved, for on my visit I saw several bitches of type and quality which will form the nucleus of a scientific breeding programme. It has been an eventful year with the breeding programme going with a swing. Ch Inadown Whispering Witch producing five bitch puppies to Shalfleet Skyliner, her dam Selbrook Rushlight having two dog and two bitch puppies by Twinrivers Sea Holly and Ghost of Test being responsible for a nice litter of blue dogs and a white bitch puppy by Inadown Blue Ghost. Several of these puppies were sold and Major and Mrs Kerr-Peterson wish their new owners every success in the future.

Three puppies from the litter sired by Inadown Blue Ghost out of Inadown Merely Me have done a very fair share of winning. Inadown Merely a Madrigal (blue hitch) now owned by Miss Smithson has won well. Inadown Merely a Maestro (blue dog) shown only a few times has won prizes each time out at championship and open shows while Inadown Merely a Melody (blue and white parti-colour bitch) made a most promising start as a puppy including best puppy in show under Mr Leo Wilson at Budmin open show, best of breed under Mr A Westlake and Mr George Down, with first prizes under Mr J Paddon and Herbert Essam, Miss Husberg and Miss Brucker as well as many other awards at open, Championship and members shows. Melody has been temporarily withdrawn from the ring to he bred from.

Another dog puppy of promise made his debut at Windsor ch show viz Inadown Post Horn Gallop (by Twinrivers Sea Holly ex Selbrook Rushlight) when he was placed second in a class of 19 under Mrs (Poppy) Martin at the age of 6 months. Since then he has been in the first three at Southampton, Cardiff, Birmingham, Bournemouth and LKA ch shows under Messrs Essam, Douglas Todd, E Griffiths, S Kay and Mrs Odell respectively; best puppy in show at Yeovil open show (judge Miss Graham Weall); puppy stakes at Shaftesbury open show (judge Mr Jimmy Allen); best of breed and winner of the AV Special puppy class at Shepton Mallet (judge Mr J Cartledge) and best puppy and reserve best in show at Swindon limited show under Mr J R Collins (USA).

The Inadowns were best team in show (first day) at Southampton ch show (judge Mrs de Casem broot) best brace in show at Shaftesbury open show (judge Mr Jimmy Allen) and best Whippet brace Birmingham ch show.

The breeding programme is as follows: Inadown Merely Me (Ch Bellavista Barry ex Bellavista Fern) brindle was bred to fawn and white particolour dog Spean Hound (Spingmere Herald ex Springmere Jetta) and was due to whelp early in November.

Inadown Merely a Melody was also due to whelp later in November. She has been mated to Black Brocade of Allways (Ch Playmate of Allways ex Black Maria of Allways). Rushlight will be bred from just once again to Twinrivers Sea Holly whilst the fawn and white particolour Inadown Bellavista Haley (Ch Telstar Moon ex Bellavista Model Maid) will also be bred from in the spring to Inadown Post Horn Gallop.

Three young dogs will be placed at stud in 1966. Inadown Merely a Maestro (blue) stands 18 inches high; Inadown Postilion (fawn) (T Sea Holly ex Selbrook Rushlight) stands 19 inches high and Inadown Post Horn Gallop (blue and white particolour) 18 1/2 inches high.

Two blue and white bitch puppies, Inadown Whispering Wood and Inadown Whispering Waltz (Shalfleet Skyliner ex Ch Inadown Whispering Witch) are now the property of Mrs Newcombe, Pennyworth Kennels, USA. Inadown Whispering Willow will have her home with Mr Douglas Todd while her litter sister Inadown Whispering Wheat is now the property of Miss Olive Smithson and Inadown Whispering Web is being retained. It is hoped by the time this goes to print that the Inadowns will be settled in their new home.—ANNA CARE.

WHAT a pleasure it was to visit this very selective kennel, and to meet Mrs Lewis again after her successful Finland judging tour. She never fails to surprise one by producing yet another lovely dog puppy. He is by Hillgarth Sheriff of Test, out of the beautiful bitch, Test Dream of Allways, white with fawn marking. He has everything, and I predict a wonderful future for him.

I had the opportunity of handling Cockrow Taratantara of Test, the bitch I gave the CC to at Bournemouth, and I was again delighted with her wonderful quality.

There have been several important sales during the past year, including the lovely bitch, Gigi of Test, who has gone to Japan. What a loss to us.

There is also a promising litter by Ch Mars of Test, who is siring real quality puppies. Together with Hillgarth Sheriff of Test, the y make a very powerful pair of studs. —STANKAY.
