Ch HARQUE THE LARK with her owner

A WONDERFUL year for the Harque Whippets. Ch Harque The Lark, like her namesake, has soared to great heights, and now holds the top winning record for a Whippet bitch, with fifteen CCs (ten times best of breed). In addition to her previous successes, during 1969 she won supreme best in show at Chester Championship Show, the Hound group and reserve best in show at Bath and LKA Championship Shows at the latter (in a record entry of 11,358) she was the best members exhibit in show, for the second year running. At Blackpool Championship show she won best of breed, and reserve best in hound group, and she won CCs at both of the SKC Championship Shows. Truly a grand record for this beautiful home bred bitch. It is hoped to breed from her in the spring.

This season's new puppy, Harque to Pegasus, a lovely home bred fawn dog by Ch Deepridge Mintmaster ex Harque to Image, has made a brilliant start to his career, gaining his junior warrant at 8 months old, (now 10 months old has thirty-five points). He won eleven firsts at champion ship shows, was the best puppy, best junior, and best dog in show at the NC Whippet Club Open Show, and best puppy all breeds at Ashfield Open Show. This lovely youngster will help to make more bearable the sad loss of Harque to Beaumont at 10 1/2 years. He was the sire of many champions including Ch Lark.

The young Pegasus will be placed at stud, along with Ch Harque to Gamecock (well known winner producer, and brother of Ch Lark). Also at stud is Major Argyle's lovely black and white Grantite Alcazar.

The young Deerhound bitch, Fir of Geltsdale, has won consistently at all types of shows, while the kennel's first Beagle, Harque Tavernmews Tuneful, also won well.

Int and Nord Ch LAGUNA LEADER
One of the top sires of any breed in Scandinavia

Pictured above the head study of Leader is one of his daughters, Ch Sabina, not by any means his top-winning puppy this year but typical of the type he produces. Mated to Mark Twain this bitch produced the best of breed winner at Vallentuna under Mrs M B Garrish from some sixty exhibits.

THE Whippets imported by this kennel and their offspring have won at every important show in Scandinavia during the past few years. The three first dogs purchased from British breeders, International Champion Laguna Locomite, International Champion Laguna Leader, and International Champion Badgewood Mark Twain, are not only sire and, or grandsire of every new champion this year but they also produced the winner at the National Racing Championships in 1966 and 1968 as well as the breed's only Obedience Champion!

All three have won the group and or best in show at Stockholm. Mark Twain, who gained his title under Mr J H J Braddon in October this year, also sired the last Swedish-bred holder of the title, International Champion Bohem Skandal. Leader, of course, is the top sire with fourteen champions to his credit and more on the way; his get have won best of breed at Stockholm International for the last two years under judges Mrs J de Casembroot and Mr S Dangerfield, both times with sixty to seventy Whippets competing, and this year his puppies won best in show at Stockholm, reserve best in show at Oslo and reserve best in group at Copenhagen!

Very little breeding is done, but Skandal this summer produced an interesting litter to her grandsire Leader.

A fourth import has made his presence felt this year: Ch Shalfleet Starbuck, who at 9 months won his first CC at Stockholm under Mrs D F Whitwell and was made up at just over 12 months under Miss I B Clay at Skövde Interntional Show, where he won the group as well. He is sired by Ch Laguna Leisure out of Ch Shalfleet Starstruck and has just started his stud career.

Afghans have hardly been shown at all, but International Champion Bohem Python at his only time out won a strong group at an international show in Denmark and a very promising Greyhound puppy out of International Champion Guld has been kept for next year's shows, co-owned with Dr G Bodegard.

Grooming the Whippet for the Show Ring.

This breed, being a very shortcoated breed, gives little concern for preparation for the show ring. There's practically no trimming to be done except to cut the whiskers on the muzzle close to the skin and to trim any long hairs along the outer edges of the ears.

Be sure the nails are cut to a medium length. Do this about three days before the date of the show. Give your whippet a bath or a wash with a wet towel the day before the show.

What is especially important is that you have a hand grooming glove or a soft cloth to go over the coat of the dog just a few minutes before you take the dog into the ring. This last minute finishing touch should bring out the sheen in the coat.—W.W.T.

(Editor's Note: As the greyhound and the whippet are substantially the tame with the exception of size, this grooming article is fully applicable to grooming the greyhound).

SHALFLEET SELEBRITY

SHALFLEET SWING HIGH

THIS year the accent on the Shalfleets seems to have been breeding rather than exhibiting although good winning has been done. Swing High has had a good time and whilst only 21 months, has several bests of breed to her credit. Selebrity has also been in the news, consistently winning and one best in show to boot. Puppies out of Enchantment and Silver Moon have all been sold—some abroad—apart from the ones retained, but these will not be seen until ready. Shalfleet Eaglelodge Laughing Water did a nice bit of winning before going off to Canada.

Selebrity is at stud to approved bitches and is a proved sire.

I saw a wonderful crop of Whippet puppies, some of which are for sale. What a grand lot they are too, anyone seeking foundation stock I can recommend these to anyone.

The Champions Sultan and Swordsman are at stud, as are also. Skyliner, Silken Ladder, Solimyth and Shelle a really good team with breeding to suit most bloodlines, Shalfleet Spanish Hawk, a grand dog who has sired a couple of litters, is a consistent winner at all types of shows and was best puppy at the Whippet Club, National and Midland Club Championship Shows. These puppies by him are extremely promising, so look out for them in 1970.

I cannot recommend the Boarding section at these famous kennels too highly. No one need have any fear in leaving his dogs under Barbara's personal supervision and her most capable staff. They will have the same lavish care and attention as indeed do all the dogs here. —JAMES BARKER 1970.

DONDELAYO

Champion Dondelayo Buckaroo, six challenge certificates, four reserve best of sex awards, best of breed and best in show awards is at stud, fee 8 gns, to approved bitches.

Proof that Dondelayos also win well for other people—Champion Dondelayo Ruanne of Charmoll (Mrs C Dempster), Champion Oakbark Dondelayo Storming (Mr D Meakin), Champion Swiftfoot Susanna (Mr J C Geary).
