"Simon" Longlesson As Good As It Gets - N.A. C.G.C. T.D.I C.D. N.A.J.

Tracy Underwood from Atlanta Georgia shares her story of owning her multi talented whippet Simon: I got Simon in October of 99 when he was 8 weeks old. I have had different breeds of dogs all my life, but this was my first sighthound. I don't know what intrigued me about Whippets, I just knew that I wanted one. I had competed in agility with my Jack Russell from 95-98, and thought the athleticism of Whippets would make them great agility dogs. I got Simon from Jan Swayze in Atlanta where I live. Simon's registered name is Longlesson As Good As It Gets - N.A. C.G.C. T.D.I. C.D. N.A.J.

I started training Simon for agility last summer, and obedience last fall. Since entering his first agility trial in Perry, GA in November, he earned his Novice Standard title with 2 first place and 1 second place finish and 1 jumpers leg. His first obedience trial was in February of this year, where he had a qualifying score both days earning him legs towards his C.D. He also took "High Scoring Hound" and "High Scoring Sighthound" that weekend.

I use strictly clicker training with all my dogs - a totally hands-off approach. Simon learns new things very quickly, but hates repetition of things over and over. The challenge has been keeping his focus and enthusiasm in the ring and during training sessions. I accomplished this by getting him CRAZY over a toy. Its actually a type of lure toy - a piece of fleece tied to a long pole. He loves playing and chasing this toy. I keep training sessions very short - about 5-10 minutes. He knows he gets to play with the "bunny" after training sessions, and after performing in agility or obedience, so he usually gives it his all. Something else we enjoy together is visting a childrens shelter with a local Pet Therapy group.

Simon did his first modeling job last week for Simmons Pet Beds. His pictures will be in a catalog - and on their website next month
